The history of atlasology

The atlas, the name given to the first or topmost cervical vertebra of the spine, owes its name to Greek mythology. Atlas, according to mythology, was condemned to bear the weight of the celestial heavens on his shoulders.

As a vertebra, the atlas plays an equally important role. Because if it moves out of alignment, it can cause genuine havoc within the body.

The Swiss Walter Landis developed his technique in 1994 on the basis of this understanding. He focused on the atlas, which he believed was the key to a correctly aligned spine and a properly functioning central nervous system. Walter Landis named his technique atlasology – the study of the atlas.
